The situation reminds me of when I was on the border near Saichen in Xizang and thought I would be arrested for not paying the right amount to the guards. There it was much more dangerous than America. I was so scared, and I realized how much I liked Hong Kong and how happy I was to be coming back to America. Unlike you Ling, I did not have anyone except a single friend to help me. It was very frightening and I am so glad you are through with court and all that. The group I worked with, so many of the younger people there want to be just like you, you should be proud; and try to ask your lawyer to follow my advice, I think it may be helpful. I agree with what Brian said. It's time to get out on the public scene, and work it to exhaustion. Charity events, parties, get-togethers. Get out into the real world again. I've been a big fan of your work (My favorite is "Red Corner"), but you have lost that spark. :-( It's time for you to get your life turned around. You can always ask us, your fans, for guidance, advice and support. Remember that you are truly liked and respected by a great deal of us. We just don't want to see anything worse happen to you.

Hi Bai --- Sorry you had to go up against celebrity hater Rocky Delgadillo, the embarassing chief prosecutor for LA City. Any other person arrested for unlawfully taking $16 in merchandise would be given a hearing and told not to do it again. But as with Paris Hilton, Delgadillo feels he needs celebrities to make himself look like he's tough on crime.
I think you made a bad mistake. Even though I know what it's like going through a breakup the day before Valentine's Day, it's obvious you tried hurting yourself possibly because you blamed yourself. Be good to yourself!
City Attorney Delgadillo would NEVER drop a theft charge against a celebrity if he thought he could prove it. I read that you were standing right outside the store at the airport when you were arrested. Why didn't they just let you pay for the merchandise? You didn't go anyplace.

That is why the case was filed as a NON-criminal infraction that only carries a fine, i.e., a slap on the wrist. An infraction takes away Bai Ling's right to a jury trial and based on the facts IN THE PRESS the prosecutor would never want to put her on trial because he would have lost.
You talked about the "expense of a trial." A court trial for petty theft would have lasted 45 minutes, just like a traffic ticket trial.
Here's my take on this. If the prosecution had the evidence they should have charged Bai Ling with a misdmeanor and forced her to plead guilty or go to trial. By charging an infraction they punted, that is, they saved face by not totally dropping their celebrity hating tactics, but made sure the charge was low enough that it was not worth Bai Ling's time to fight it. Welcome to the real world. That's why I loved doing adoptions and not criminal law.

Granted, in this forum you are protected to a limited degreee by the relative anonymity of the Internet.
However, given the fact that Bai Ling is no longer charged with the offense of larceny, and in fact this historic charge has been resolved in favor of the Defendant, if I were her solicitor I would do my very utmost to identify the parties who persist in publishing these spurious and groundless allegations.

While not guilty to theif due to a plea you have been found guilty of a lessor charge and paid the fine. Move on and as they say in NYC "Forget about it". Although I would not rejoyce too loud next time they might not be as nice and this blog could bite you in the ass. Its almost as if your thumbing your nose to the judge and others. They frown upon that here in the US if they let you out on a lessor offense if you made a ass out of them then if it happens again they will come at you in with full force. Factually speaking, "Bai" is Bai Ling's *last* name.
Bai means "White" in Chinese, while "Ling" is translated variously as "spirit" or "clever."
In China, the last name goes first. So it is more proper to call her "Bai Ling" or "Bai Xiaojie" or "Bai Nushi" or just "Ling" if you have a relationship with her and feel that comfortable.
I prefer "the Angel" myself.

Since you ask so urgently, Melissa, yes, I do admit that I have found Bai Ling strangely attractive of late, but not for the reasons that you might think.
I for one had never heard of Bai Ling prior to the airport incident.
I know that's strange in lieu of her apparent notoriety in more hip circles, but your Prof spends most of his time lucubrating over dusty old law books and doesn't have much time to have . . . well . . a life.
What attracted me to Bai Ling at the time was the simple fact that she was under attack and seemed to need some defending.

All these bastards knew was that someone famous was in the spotlight for something scandalous and they were there to get their jollies attacking her.
Now that the crisis has passed, I suppose there is really no good excuse for me hanging around these parts anymore, except that I admit I've become somewhat addicted to Bai Ling's incredibly wild postings.
Despite what many haters have said here, I think that what Bai Ling writes is very beautiful and profound, in an enticingly innocent and unpretentious sort of way.
